Regional Microgrids Program
The Regional Microgrids Program (the Program) has up to $125 million to develop and deploy renewable energy microgrids across regional Australia, with a stream for First Nation
As is clearly outlined on the Australian Government's Energy Innovation Toolkit, there is no definition of a Microgrid captured within the Energy Legislation or framework. Most recently, this has taken a journey with terminology more clearly defined as a Stand-Alone Power System or SAPS, recently implemented in 2022.
These various considerations led to the current research: to review those feasibility studies of the microgrid projects funded under the Australian Government's Regional and Remote Communities Reliability Fund (RRCRF) between 2019 and 2024 and explore in detail some of these drivers, barriers, and opportunities.
The Victorian Government is supporting and developing microgrids. A microgrid can be thought of as a small 'subset' of the electricity grid that provides energy generation and storage to properties at a local level. They can incorporate renewable energy generation from solar panels or wind turbines as well as battery energy storage.
These localised energy networks offer a resilient and sustainable alternative to traditional centralised power grids. By integrating distributed energy resources, particularly solar energy, microgrids are revolutionising the way communities and businesses generate, distribute, and consume electricity.
