Italy has taken a major step forward in its energy transition efforts, giving the green light to 361 MW of new battery energy storage systems (BESS) spread across three regions—Lazio, Puglia, and Sardinia.
To date, Enel has three battery energy storage systems in operation in Italy, with a total capacity of 133 MW. And the prospects for growth are excellent: at the Capacity Market 2024 auction, we were awarded another 19 systems with a total capacity of about 1.6 GW.
The industrial group's report said 209,112 energy storage systems were installed in Italy last year, with total rated power of 2,113 MW and storage capacity of 5,921 MWh. That took the nation to 733,666 systems, at the end of the year, with 5,565 MW total rated power and 12,942 MWh of storage.
There can be no real energy transition in Italy without electricity storage systems. And here Enel is also playing a leading role, particularly in battery energy storage systems (BESS), which are increasingly efficient and competitive, thanks to technological innovation.
