The Kingdom of Thailand is located at a strategic crossroads in Southeast Asia. With an area of over 200,000 square miles, Thailand is the second largest nation in Southeast Asia. Topographically, Thailand presents a varied landscape of forested mountains, dry plateaus, fertile river plains, and sandy beaches.
The region consists mainly of the dry Khorat Plateau and a few low hills. The short monsoon season brings heavy flooding in the river valleys. Unlike the more fertile areas of Thailand, the Northeast has a long dry season, and much of the land is covered by sparse grasses.
It is bordered by 4 countries: Myanmar to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the southeast, and Malaysia to the south. The country has coastlines along the Andaman Sea to the west and the Gulf of Thailand to the east, providing access to significant maritime routes. Thailand is the 53rd largest country in the world by total area.
