Discover Qatar''s major step in its energy transition with the new 800 MW Al Kharsaah solar power plant, a key project advancing its 2050 net-zero goals.
PVTIME – QatarEnergy, the Qatari state-owned petroleum giant, has recently announced plans to develop solar power projects with a total capacity of 2GW in the Dukhan area, approximately 80km west of Doha. The new 2GW facility will more than double Qatar's installed PV capacity by 2030, increasing its PV solar capacity to approximately 4GW.
The new 2GW facility will more than double Qatar's installed PV capacity by 2030, increasing its PV solar capacity to approximately 4GW. It is expected that solar power will provide about 30% of the country's electricity by that time.
Currently, efforts have focused on developing solar capacity in the country through research centers, universities, utilities and pilot projects, and a number of institutions including Kahramaa, Qatar Foundation, QNFSP and QSTP are actively working on this front.
Moreover, Qatar Energy continues to develop a massive solar project in Dukhan area with a production capacity of 2,000 megawatts, set to become one of the largest solar plants globally. It is expected to be operational by the end of this decade.
